Length 7.5 miles

Ascent 456ft

Difficulty level  Moderate

This is a super warm-up walk and takes in Moffat's many quirky landmarks including the Moffat Museum, two towers, the Dowding Memorial, the world's narrowest pub and the Moffat Old Churchyard, where John Loudon McAdam (of Tarmac fame) is buried. Later on, we will pass Dumcrieff House, the Georgian mansion where he once lived, standing majestic in the equally stunning landscape. A roller he once used is still in the grounds.

If you want to tick off the 'ways', there are two on this walk. We traverse the mighty Southern Upland Way (SUW) – Scotland's first official coast-to-coast long-distance walking route (211 miles in total). And there's also the Annandale Way – another superb walking route (56 miles) – which runs alongside the SUW from Dumcrieff.

This is a super warm-up walk and takes in Moffat's many quirky landmarks including the Moffat Museum, two towers, the Dowding Memorial, the world's narrowest hotel and the Moffat Old Churchyard, where John Loudon McAdam (of Tarmac fame) is buried.

We will start at the Dyke Farm Nature Reserve, a former gravel quarry, which now is a sanctuary for wildflowers and many birds - even the great spotted woodpecker, normally a shy creature.

There are three ponds, two hides, and a variety of circular woodland walks with bench seats.

We will pass Dumcrieff House, the Georgian mansion where McAdam once lived, standing majestic in the equally stunning landscape. A roller he once used is still in the grounds.

Our walk takes us on quiet country lanes and pathways, through some charming woods alongside Moffat Water, crossing springy fields and the famous Toot Corner.

Catherine the Great's personal physician also lived at Dumcrieff House at one time.

From here it's just a short walk back to the start.
