Darkness, stars, whisky and a chance to look through big telescopes combine in Moffat.

We will be taking a walk at night around Europe's first Dark Sky Town looking at the stars.

We will have the opportunity to visit the Moffat Community Observatory while stopping in at the Moffat Distillery.

Apart from looking for stars we will discover what makes Moffat a Dark Sky Community.

It is more than just being a dark place where you can see stars. You need a town with people who are interested in keeping it dark, who love stars and darkness. You need businesses who see the need for low light pollution.

We will hear about how Jim Paterson helped with the designation of the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park and the Dark Sky Town of Moffat.

We will be seeing what the Moffat Distillery has done with its lights and having a wee taste of the whisky they make too.

MEET THE WALK LEADERS

This is Sonny...

Sonny is an amateur astronomer who has an interest in sharing his knowledge of just how much can be observed with the naked eye and basic binoculars. He has been vice-chairman of the Bassetlaw Astronomical Society before moving to the Tweed Valley to take advantage of the dark skies that the area has to offer. Now heavily involved with Moffat Astronomical Club, he also spends his spare time walking his two collies and supporting the local community.
