To the Roof of Moffat
A Demanding Climb up Hart Fell
At 2,650ft, Hart Fell is the highest point in the surrounding hills of Moffat. Its most impressive feature is the deep sculptured glacial glen of Black Hope to the east of the summit.
The walk takes the more gentle ascent from the west. Having been dropped off at the junction to Old Newton Farm, our route takes the track through the valley to the wooden bridge that crosses the Lochan Burn.
Although this is a tough climb,
your new walking mates and the spectacular scenery will
spur you on.
From that point, we commence the lung-busting 1,968ft climb via Billscleuch Moor to the Hall Fell Trig Point. Here we will take a well-earned break and simply enjoy the views.
The return journey takes the more sedate descent along the ridge line southwest via Arthur's Seat, allowing walkers to enjoy the stunning scenery.
Eventually, we arrive back at the community hall, having completed the six-mile challenge.
Transport is included to take us back to town.
Top tip This is an all-day walk so please bring a packed lunch
This is Andy
Andy has always enjoyed the escapism of hill walking. He spent a week in Norway obtaining his military group leaders qualification while serving in the Army. The services being big on adventure training meant he could walk Bavaria on her majesty's time! On returning to the UK he became a volunteer instructor with the sea cadets and unfortunately his qualification, despite the high standard set by the military, was not recognised in ‘civvie street’, so he re-took the walk leaders course this time spread over two weekends in the Yorkshire Dales, a beautiful part of the world. He revisited the Dales many times and of course took up the Yorkshire Three Peak Challenge. Nearer to home he walked the Derbyshire Peak District. As you are about to discover the hills around Moffat offer their own stunning views of the world with a very unique and fascinating history.
