Discover the Devil’s Beef Tub

A scenic walk through Glacial Time.

Step into a landscape shaped by ice, time and local history. The Devil’s Beef Tub is a

dramatic 150m hollow, formed by the slow power of glaciers and carved into the hills

of the Scottish Borders. And taking its name from the Border Reivers period (13th to 17th century).

The Devil's Beeftub is famous for both it's geography and it's history.

The walk follows the Annandale Way, taking you across three of the four hills that form the hollow.

  • Annanhead Hill (478m)
  • Peat Knowe (456m)
  • The Great Hill (466m)

From there you continue along the Annandale Way to Sproug Crag, before making the descent to the valley floor where you are greeted by that “wow” moment – looking up at the impressive ridge line and unique scenery that make the Devil’s Beef Tub so unforgettable.

Finally, a leisurely mile long warm down walk takes us to the pickup point and return to Moffat.

Come for the views. Stay for the feeling of being somewhere special -where the land still tells its story.

MEET THE WALK LEADERS

MEET THE WALK LEADERS

This is Andy

Andy has always enjoyed the escapism of hill walking. He spent a week in Norway obtaining his military group leaders qualification while serving in the Army. The services being big on adventure training meant he could walk Bavaria on her majesty's time! On returning to the UK he became a volunteer instructor with the sea cadets and unfortunately his qualification, despite the high standard set by the military, was not recognised in ‘civvie street’, so he re-took the walk leaders course this time spread over two weekends in the Yorkshire Dales, a beautiful part of the world. He revisited the Dales many times and of course took up the Yorkshire Three Peak Challenge. Nearer to home he walked the Derbyshire Peak District. As you are about to discover the hills around Moffat offer their own stunning views of the world with a very unique and fascinating history.
